BP and Sempra team up for $1bn US Wind Farm Programme
Just weeks after controversially ditching its solar division, oil giant BP has underscored its commitment to the fast-expanding wind energy sector by announcing plans to build two giant US wind farms, with a combined capacity of 560MW.
The company announced yesterday that it has expanded its partnership with developer Sempra US Gas & Power in an agreement that will see the two companies jointly develop the proposed Mehoopany Wind Farm in Pennsylvania and the Flat Ridge 2 Wind Farm in Kansas.
The two projects will require a combined investment of more than $1bn and will result in the largest wind farms in their respective states.
John Graham, president and chief executive of BP Wind Energy, issued a statement hailing the partnership and the new investment as evidence of the company's "commitment to produce essential sources of energy and provide cost-competitive power to our customers".
Significantly, the projects are well advanced and expected to be in full commercial operation by the end of the year, at which point BP will be installed as the operator of both facilities.
Work on the 141MW Mehoopany Wind Farm began last November, and power supply contracts with Old Dominion Electric Cooperative and Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative have already been secured.
Similarly, three power supply contracts have been secured for the 419MW Flat Ridge 2 Wind Farm. Blattner Energy has been awarded the construction contract, which will result in 262 GE wind turbines being erected, each with 1.6MW of capacity.
